The Coolest & Most Unusual Watches For Men and Woman Launched Over the Last 9 Years

Montblanc Tourbillon - by far our preferred winner of the most interesting, cool and unusual watches for men as of 2024

It’s hard to define the precise moment when watches became more than just a way to tell the time. From around the 16th century, pocket watches were a symbol of sophistication for wealthy nobility. As horology advanced through the 19th century, designs became more intricate and expressive  and were soon adopted by individuals who prized style and fashion.

However, it wasn’t until World War I that cool watches for men really took off. Soldiers were given wristwatches to help coordinate attacks and movements from the trenches, and soon, these timepieces became part of civilian life as troops returned from the war.

The Art Deco movement between the 20s and 30s saw trailblazing, avant-garde, and unusual watches that were sported by celebrities and trendsetters alike. By the 50s, brands like Rolex had become the hallmark of adventure and innovation, and set the scene for the golden age of luxury watches, widely regarded as between 1965 and 1975.

While the 80s and 90s saw digital watches become a big technology trend, vintage timepieces never really went out of fashion or lost their luster as a status symbol. Now, as the world becomes increasingly digital and uniform, vintage analog watches are the coolest thing to have on the wrist for the fashion-conscious man or woman.

New watches are being released all the time. While some watch collectors pine for the security and glory days of horology past, there are new classics turning heads each year.

Let’s explore some cool watches for men and women in the modern era.

Table of Contents

THE MOST UNFORGETTABLE WATCHES OF 2023

The most unforgettable watches of 2023 aren’t necessarily the most well-known or the most expensive. Some feature daring design choices that blow you away on first look, while others are more restrained but reveal their beauty as you notice the fine details and next-level craftsmanship.

Let’s look at what was on offer in 2023 from the best watch brands for women and men.

1. VAN CLEEF & ARPELS LUDO SECRET WATCH

The Van Cleef & Arpels Ludo Secret is easily one of the best ladies watches of 2023. It draws inspiration from the Ludo bracelet, an iconic piece of fashion history created in 1934. The 18kt gold ribbon is replete with diamonds, sapphires, and mother-of-pearl, which gives it an eye-catching sparkle that you won’t find in your average timepiece.

However, what elevates this watch beyond the realms of luxury jewelry and into the halls of cool is the fact that the watch is secret. Yes, you can open the hinges on this elegant couture timepiece to reveal a small and subtle watch. The dial itself is gorgeous and powered by Swiss quartz movement, so it’s a true marriage of elegance, practicality, and performance.

The Ludo Secret Watch is available in 18kt rose, yellow, and white gold. We think the rose gold version is the most breathtaking; however, the other options are both visually striking. Indeed, Van Cleef offers a lot of choices, with jewels like Lapis Lazuli, Sapphire, and Chrysoprase all offering different looks.

This is, without a doubt, one of the coolest and best female watches of 2023. But with a price of $200,000, you better start saving now.

2. AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK “CACTUS JACK” 26585CM

The US rapper Travis Scott’s collaboration with Nike has produced some of the coolest sneakers and streetwear over the last few years. However, this Cactus Jack-Audemars Piguet collab was a 2023 showstopper.

This limited edition watch features a durable and lightweight ceramic case, a first for AP. The open-worked dial and brown bridges and plates easily make this one of the most unique watches for men in the modern era. However, the luminescent hour and minute hands and calfskin strap bring it to the next level.

Of course, this being Audemars Piguet, the watch is not style over substance. It has an Audemars Piguet caliber 5832, which is an automatic movement with a perpetual calendar complication, which means the timepiece won’t need adjustment until 2100.

Only 200 of these limited edition watches were ever released. The price tag was about $200,000, but the hype is bubbling on the secondary market. Currently, asking prices are well in excess of $500,000, but whether there are takers at that price remains to be seen.

3.  PATEK PHILIPPE CALATRAVA TRAVEL TIME REF. 5224R-001

A list of cool watches for men would not be complete without a piece from the esteemed Patek Phillipe. Released in 2023, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Travel Time ref. 5224R-001 is a beguiling mix of contemporary horology tech with a traditional design.

There is so much to love about this watch it’s hard to know where to start. Firstly, the case is made from a luxurious rose gold that oozes class. The curved two-tier lugs and blue nubuck leather strap with cream stitching are pure sophistication. However, it’s the dial where things get really interesting.

The deep navy blue dial looks amazing against the case and features a novel 24-hour display. What’s more, the dial has a second time zone, making the watch perfect for travelers who want to track local and home time. Movement is provided by a Self-winding Caliber 31-260 PS FUS 24H. In short, this is a watch that will outlast its owners.

Some of the more unique watches for men can look a bit too unconventional and flashy. This timepiece is a conversation starter but somehow stays reserved at the same time. At $57,000 a piece, don’t expect to see too many in the wild.

4. BULGARI SERPENTI MISTERIOSI WHITE GOLD REF.103795

Bulgari is easily one of the best watch brands for women. They mix the best of hauteur jewelry with incredible craft to produce timepieces that wouldn’t look out of place in an art gallery. The Serpenti Misteriosi is all that and more.

Some of the best female watches on the market feature diamonds and other precious gems. The Serpenti Misteriosi takes things a step further because it’s shaped like a serpent with a watch hidden inside its mouth. It features an 18kt white gold case paved with diamonds. What’s more, it has two small emeralds for eyes, completing the look.

This watch might not be to everybody’s taste due to its unique and loud design. However, we think that the 2023 white gold version has something more subtle and understated than the other gold varieties of this watch.

5. OMEGA SEAMASTER PLOPROF 1200M

2023 was the 75th anniversary of the Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M. So, what better way to celebrate the milestone birthday of this iconic timepiece than a special edition release?

The 2023 model draws inspiration from the distinctive asymmetric early 70s design. The original was made for diving to 600m. As such, the case was bulky and considered too big for everyday use. This new Proplof is dialed back a bit, with the case dropping from 48mm to 48mm, giving it a more sleek design that won’t look out of place on land.

What we love most about this new limited version is the stunning gradient blue dial. Bright in the center and gradually darker as it reaches the edges, the 75th anniversary Seamaster really stands out from the crowd.

Just like the original Ploprof, this new version features an oversized crown guard and a helium escape valve. Combined with the proprietary O-MEGASTEEL, the Ploprof is light but virtually indestructible.

Throw in a stunning presentation box and the “Seamaster 75th Anniversary” inscription on the case back, and you’ve got something really special here. Expect this beauty to appreciate on the secondary market.

6. ZENITH CHRONOMASTER SPORT AARON RODGERS

The next super cool watch on our list is another collaboration between a famous watchmaker and a cultural icon. This time, it’s Zenith’s partnership with star NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Chronomaster Sport Aaron Rodgers is limited to 250 pieces. It’s based on the classic Chronomaster Sport, but this 2023 version has enough little details to make it a worthy entry to the series.

The stainless steel case comes with a handsome green ceramic bezel. It’s a reference to the Green Bay Packers, who Rodgers turned out for between 2005 and 2023. The dial also uses the Packers green and features the tri-color Arabic hour numerals that are recognizable from the numbers used on American football jerseys. Finally, the case back features a number between 1 and 250 and Rodgers’ signature. It’s a must for Packers fans and watch collectors around the world.

We love this partnership because the watch is just as consistent and resilient as Rodgers was in his pomp. It features an El Primero 3600 automatic chronograph movement, widely regarded as one of the most accurate and dependable in the world. This timepiece can also measure time up to 1/10th of a second, which is something that Rodgers needed to be able to do to pick out his teammates on the field.

While this special series quickly sold out on the Zenith site, you can find it on the secondary market. However, it’s already appreciated from around $10k to nearer $14k, a testament to the appeal of this watch and the special place that Rodgers occupies in the heart of global sports fans.

The Yacht-Master comes in a 42mm case made out of oyster steel. It is accented with 18ct yellow gold and has a matching Oysterflex bracelet. The Yacht-Master is also functional. The dial pops against the polished oyster steel and draws your attention without being gaudy.

The Day-Date has a proud history that started in 1956 when it was the first watch to include the day of the week. The Day-Date 40 continues this proud tradition and indicates the day of the week at the top of the dial. The fluted bezel rounds out this gorgeous timepiece.

So, let us list the ten best watches for 2015!

1. Cartier Ballon Bleu Serti Vibrant

Cartier did what they do best and swamped their 2015 with an enormous amount of diamonds. There were 123 stones on that year’s version of the cool Ballon Bleu watch and it certainly made an interesting statement.

The unusual watch borrowed from an obscure setting style called en Tremblant. This is where diamonds are mounted to the watch via springs. The result was the marvelous sparkle that was visible when holding the cool watch up to the light.

The industry standard was every 122 years and that’s why this cool watch was Jaegers flagship watch for the season.

4. Vacheron Constantin Harmony Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph Caliber 3500

Vacheron Constantin only released these really cool mens’ watches as part of a limited run so there were only ten available. These interesting and unusual watches also came at a premium price of £235,000 which made it one of the most expensive watches on show in 2015.

However, if you are looking for totally sleek, cool and intersting watches, then look no further. The Caliber 3500 featured a relatively succinct sense of style in comparison to its other premium rivals. Only the keenest eyes could notice this kind of craftsmanship.

5. Montblanc Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Geospheres Vasco de Gama

No, you’re wrong. This wasn’t a special association with the legendary Brazilian football team. This was the crème de la crème, the coolest French watch-making at its best. These interesting and unusual watches for men had a really cool feature that showed the time in any part of the world at any time via the use of two globes. These half-globes are part of the watch-face.

However, this level of cool and craftsmanship does come with a price and because of Montblanc’s strong belief that every watch should be hand-crafted there was a small amount of availability.

These sleek yet very interesting watches may not be for everyone but the cool Tourbillon 24 secondes have definitely got influencers talking.

Cartier has long been the gold standard in terms of high-end watches and jewellery and the 2015 edition followed that legacy.

9. Panerai Radiomir 47mm 3 Days Firenze Acciaio

Another limited edition interesting watch, this particular piece is even harder to get hold of nowadays. These really cool watches were only available for natives of the Italian city of Florence, quite an unusual marketing strategy. The watch was essentially just a slight improvement on the previous model, the seminal Radiomir.

The main difference was that the mechanism has been changed to a more reliable Panerai P.3000.
