Are you thinking of taking a loan on your Rare Old book?

If you have a collection of old and rare books, you could be unlocking their potential by securing loans against it at our award-winning pawn shop in Mayfair, Central London. Whether you have a few first editions or an extensive collection, we can help you release the dormant capital from your old rare books, enabling you to finance any large purchase or investment you may have in mind.

With over 30 years of experience, we use highly experienced pawnbroking experts in the world of rare and valuable books to appraise your collection – in fact, all our loans are based on auction prices!

By using us to borrow against old books, you’ll be gaining access to experts who will research everything they can about both the book and the author. Not all rare books are equally valuable. By knowing the timeline of the author, we’ll be able to determine when your books were published.

We also have plenty of expertise when it comes to printing methods, meaning we may be able to tell the age of the book by how the paper feels and how the text looks. Another way to determine the type of book collection you have is by checking whether all the original binding remains intact. Rebound books can often lose plenty of value, so the closer your collection is to its original condition, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to pawn your rare old books for a significant value at our Central London shop.

What makes a book rare?

For book enthusiasts, aka collectors and librarians, the quality of the book determines how much value will be attached to it. But ‘value’ is a complex thing only determined by many factors. But the one factor overriding all is an individual’s desire or willingness to deem it something fascinating, interesting, and therefore collectable and valuable.

Indeed a book’s rarity is a complex thing to determine even by most experienced pawnbrokers. There are books that are still in circulation from the 17th century that can be bought for a very modest sum. They are books that are scarce, and may not necessarily be in demand, but they are not rare.

Determining Rarity

For enthusiasts and collectors alike the buying and selling of these works of art is important. These are relics of bygone humanity, education and cultural artefacts that must be treasured.

Therefore some books are particularly poignant, of note, or worthy of preservation and celebration. But what factors determine rarity and therefore value? If we were to give a concise summary we would note that availability, condition, special features, associations, and sources included proved to be huge value-determining factors.

Rare Books

Exampples of rare books include an originally translated holy bible, early influential scientific journals, books on the history of London, and ancient cultural and historical texts.

For example Darwin (Bernard) Introduction: A Golfer’s Gallery by Old Masters is detailed as being painted and bound folio. The term ‘folio’, from the Latin folium (leaf) refers to both the paper itself and the method of arranging the pages.

Secondly, extremely rare personal accounts present a detailed insight into James Whatman’s early 19th century manuscript of a tour around the continent. It was written three and a half years in France (during the Peace of Amiens), Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, the Baltic, Poland, and Russia 1805 [ 1802 – 1805 ]. Books like this are extremely desirable to collectors and pawnbrokers that want an authentic and un-interrupted document of someone’s personal journey, and will sell for £8000 +.
