Richard Mille RM 11-03 – A Collateral Loan Case Study Example
A Richard Mille RM 11-03 is a highly specific asset. Watches that look broadly similar can have radically different values depending on whether they are titanium, gold, Carbon TPT, Quartz TPT, ceramic or a numbered limited edition.
This illustrative case study explains how a specialist may assess the exact reference, skeletonised movement, tonneau-shaped case, strap and clasp, supporting documents and current buyer demand before considering whether you could use a Richard Mille RM 11-03 watch as collateral for loans.

Scenario: An acquisition window with a defined exit
In this demonstrative scenario, an entrepreneur contacts our Mayfair office after agreeing terms to acquire a small specialist business. That opportunity requires a deposit within a short window, while funds from the sale of another business interest are expected to become available later in the quarter.
Rather than sell a Richard Mille RM 11-03 that had been part of his collection for several years, the owner wants to understand whether it could provide temporary capital. The proposed loan would bridge a defined transaction, with the anticipated business-sale proceeds forming the intended repayment route and covering any attendant interest.
At first contact, the client supplies photographs of the watch from the front, side and rear, alongside its box, warranty card, service documentation and spare strap. These materials would allow for an initial discussion, but they would not establish authenticity, condition or a final loan figure. Those questions required physical assessment, so the client agrees to come to our office, which is a short walk away from Bond Street Station.

Identifying the exact RM before quoting a value
The watch is identified as a Richard Mille RM 11-03 Automatic Flyback Chronograph in grade 5 titanium. This is a critical step because an RM 11 covers a variety of references and prices.
The earlier RM 011, the RM 11-03, an RM 11-02 and the various McLaren, Felipe Massa, Le Mans or other limited editions can share a tonneau profile and skeletonised appearance. However, their production periods, calibres, materials, scarcity and buyer markets are distinct.
The RM 11-03 uses the automatic RMAC3 calibre. It combines hours, minutes and seconds with a flyback chronograph, 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o’clock, 12-hour totaliser, oversize date, month indicator and variable-geometry rotor. Its twin-barrel construction provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.
The titanium case is an equally important factor. An RM 11-03 in titanium should not be valued against a rose-gold model, Carbon TPT case, ceramic version, Quartz TPT execution or numbered limited edition. Each uses a different material, carries different replacement and servicing considerations, and may trade in a different price bracket.

Reading the case as an engineering component
At our Mayfair office, the specialist examins the titanium bezel, caseband, caseback, crown, pushers, crystal and exposed screw heads. The aim is to identify damage, inconsistent finishing, corrosion, non-matching components, poorly fitted replacement parts or evidence that requires further scrutiny.
Unlike the smooth polished surfaces of a conventional gold dress watch, an RM 11-03 has a layered construction where the fit of the case sections, condition of the screws and presentation of the titanium surfaces all matter. A marked case, compromised screw head or damaged pusher can be more significant than a routine surface scratch because of the watch’s technical construction and the potential cost of correct remedial work.
The white rubber strap and titanium clasp are also reviewed. A Richard Mille strap is not an interchangeable accessory in the ordinary sense. The correct shape, fit, wear pattern and clasp configuration contribute to the watch’s completeness and wearability. The spare strap supplied by the client supports the overall presentation, but cannot replace the need to assess the fitted components.

The RMAC3 movement and functional checks
The RM 11-03’s skeletonised construction means the movement is entirely visible, which makes the movement is both a technical component and a major visual element.
The RMAC3 uses grade 5 titanium baseplates and bridges, treated with PVD and carefully finished. Its variable-geometry rotor can be adjusted to suit the owner’s activity level, while the movement’s paired barrels are designed to provide stable energy delivery.
The assessment considers the visible movement architecture, rotor, date and month display, winding action, time setting and chronograph functions. The flyback system is checked through appropriate operation of the pushers. Some of the things our appraiser would expect include the chronograph resetting and restarting cleanly, rather than exhibiting hesitation, irregular hand alignment or inconsistent response.
No single external inspection can substitute for a full technical service. However, a watch showing functional irregularities, unusual wear or inconsistency with its stated configuration may require further review before it can be considered for collateral purposes.

Documents and manufacturer-service evidence
At this price level, a box and warranty card are useful but insufficient on their own. The Richard Mille specialist needs to consider whether the serial and reference details correspond with the watch, whether the supplied documents form a coherent history, and whether the service paperwork identified work performed by Richard Mille or an appropriate specialist.
This is especially relevant because a modern Richard Mille may have had straps, clasps, crystals, crowns, pushers or movement components replaced during its life. Correct manufacturer service can be reassuring; however, the work carried out must be understood because it can affect a watch’s originality, condition and presentation.
Richard Mille materials should also be identified accurately. Titanium, Carbon TPT, Quartz TPT, ceramic, white gold and rose gold are not interchangeable descriptions. Carbon TPT is built from ultra-thin layers of carbon fibre set at varying angles, producing a recognisable patterned surface, while Quartz TPT uses quartz fibres in a related process.
This example concerned titanium, so composite-material patterning was not central to the appraisal. It is included because it shows why an online listing that merely says RM 11 may be too vague to support a reliable indication.

Current RM 11-03 market evidence
Richard Mille RM 011 and RM 11-03 prices rose sharply during the 2020–2022 luxury-watch boom, with some variants reaching around £180,000–£190,000 before the wider secondary market corrected.
Recent auction results show why the exact watch matters. More conventional RM 011 and RM 11-03 examples have achieved roughly £100,000–£145,000, while stronger configurations can reach £160,000–£200,000. Limited editions, precious-metal watches and exotic-material models can exceed £200,000, but they are not suitable comparables for a standard titanium version.
For this illustrative, full-set titanium RM 11-03, a realistic current secondary-market working range is £145,000–£180,000, subject to authentication, condition, flyback operation, service evidence and recent like-for-like sales. This reflects the more settled post-boom market, rather than exceptional Covid-era prices. It also illustrates why current secondary market price, and not what the customer paid at the peak, is what determines loan value.

Illustrative collateral-loan assessment
The client’s watch is presented with its original box, warranty material, service documents and spare strap. It appears to be a titanium RM 11-03 with a consistent configuration, functioning flyback chronograph and no obvious issue preventing further consideration.
If authentication and technical review are satisfactory, and current market evidence supports the assessment, a short-term collateral loan in the region of £90,000 to £110,000 could be possible.
This illustrative range reflects a cautious proportion of the assumed £145,000 to £180,000 secondary-market value. The final figure could be higher or lower depending on the exact RM reference and material, case condition, operation of the flyback chronograph, service history, originality, documentation and current buyer demand.

Completing the acquisition bridge
The client selects a three-month loan term on the luxury watch to cover the period between the acquisition deposit and the expected proceeds from the sale of the other business interest. The client is able to read the pre-contract information and proposed agreement before deciding whether to proceed.
If all parties accepted the terms, the RM 11-03 would be held as security in secure storage for the agreed period. The owner would retain the ability to redeem the watch on repayment in accordance with the agreement, rather than permanently parting with it at the point of the business transaction.
The scenario illustrates a defined short-term purpose. It does not imply that an anticipated liquidity event is guaranteed or that an owner should rely on a collateral loan without considering the costs, term and a realistic repayment plan.

Could your Richard Mille support a specialist assessment?
This case study shows why Richard Mille watches require a reference-by-reference assessment. The material, movement, configuration, service record and market position can be more important than the broad model family named in an online listing.
At New Bond Street Pawnbrokers, we can review the available details and arrange a specialist appointment at 5 Blenheim Street, Mayfair. Any final offer depends on the individual watch, authentication and condition assessment, current market evidence and the agreed loan terms.
Any loan is subject to assessment, acceptance and the terms of the agreement.
