Breguet Type XX Aéronavale – A Collateral Loan Case Study Example

The Breguet Type XX Aéronavale 3800 is a practical, aviation-inspired chronograph with a very different valuation story from a precious-metal dress watch or a highly hyped steel sports model. This illustrative case study explains how we look at the exact reference, flyback mechanism, condition, service history and current secondary-market evidence when a client wants to use a Breguet Type XX watch as collateral for loans.

Scenario: A business payment gap before a confirmed settlement

A self-employed contractor contacted New Bond Street Pawnbrokers after completing a specialist installation project. The client has an agreed settlement due from the project. However, they need temporary funds before that payment clears to cover staff costs and order materials for the next job.

The owner does not wish to sell his Breguet Type XX Aéronavale. It had been worn regularly for many years and was one of the few watches he intends to keep. Instead, he asks whether its current market value could support a short facility while he waits for the incoming payment.

At the first stage, we would ask for images of the dial, case, caseback, bezel, crown, chronograph pushers, bracelet or strap, and any box, warranty documentation, invoices or service records. Photographs can help identify the likely reference, but a full condition review and potential loan offer require an in-person assessment.

Identifying a civilian Type XX

In this scenario, the client’s watch is identified as a Breguet Type XX Aéronavale reference 3800ST. It is a stainless-steel automatic flyback chronograph, usually recognised by its black dial, luminous Arabic numerals, rotating bezel and three-register layout.

Breguet used Type 20 for watches created to meet the French military specification of the 1950s, while Type XX in Roman numerals is generally associated with civilian models. While Type 20 and Type XX models belong to similar families, they can differ significantly in price on the secondary market.

Breguet traces the Type XX story to the French Air Force’s early-1950s requirement for an aviation chronograph; its current collection also distinguishes Type 20 as the military-inspired designation.

The 3800 was introduced in 1995 and remained in production until 2018. It sits within a more accessible part of the Breguet market than the maison’s precious-metal Classique, Marine, Tradition or high-complication watches. However, even within the 3800 reference, factors like age, dial configuration, lume, condition and servicing can all affect an individual assessment.

Checking the watch as a working chronograph

The first technical question is not simply whether the watch was running. A Type XX is built around its chronograph function, and the owner’s example would need to be assessed as a functioning instrument as well as a luxury asset.

The Type XX 3800 uses Breguet calibre 582, an automatic chronograph movement based on the Lemania 1350 with a flyback module. It has an approximately 48-hour power reserve and allows the user to reset and restart the chronograph with a single press, rather than stopping, resetting and starting the timing sequence separately.

During inspection, the pushers, chronograph start/stop action, reset, flyback response, central chronograph hand and sub-dials would need to be checked. The rotating bezel, crown and crystal were also reviewed for wear, damage and correct operation.

A smooth flyback action does not guarantee the overall condition of the movement. Yet, poor reset alignment, erratic hand movement, sticky pushers or unexplained timing issues may indicate that further technical work is needed. That can affect both the cost of future servicing and limit the watch’s attractiveness to a potential buyer.

Lume, dial and service history

The Aéronavale’s black dial and luminous Arabic numerals are key parts of its aviation-watch character. The luxury watch specialist reviews the dial printing, numerals, hands, minute track and luminous material for consistency, condition and signs of moisture damage, deterioration or later replacement.

The age of the watch can matter. Some earlier 3800 examples used tritium luminous material, which may develop an even cream or khaki patina over time. Later examples use different luminous compounds. Neither is automatically superior in every circumstance, but the dial, hands and lume should make sense together for the watch’s likely production period.

Service records are also important. A properly maintained chronograph can be more reassuring than one with no service history, particularly where the flyback mechanism operates correctly. However, service work must be understood rather than treated as an automatic premium. For example, replacement hands, dial work, a new bezel or refinishing can change the watch’s originality and collector appeal.

In this scenario, the owner has retained a service invoice and original box, although not the original warranty material. The absence of papers does not automatically rule out a loan, but it is typically reflected in the overall picture when the market evidence is considered.

Finding comparable Type XX evidence

As mentioned above, a Type XX Aéronavale 3800 should be compared with similar 3800 examples, not with an early military Type 20, a later Type XXI or Type XXII, or a date-equipped 3820 Transatlantique.

Recent secondary-market data suggests that standard steel 3800ST examples commonly sit around £4,500 to £6,500. However, much depends on condition, service history, strap or bracelet, box and papers.

Dealer listings can be higher, while auction prices may fall lower where condition is uncertain or servicing is due. Recent recorded market transactions include examples in the region of £3,400 to £4,000, while current UK dealer retail for an unworn or newly warranted 3800ST has been listed at £11,400. These are different sale contexts and should not be blended into a single figure.

The most useful comparison is a recently sold watch with the same reference, similar dial and lume configuration, comparable condition and a similar level of documentation. That lets the specialist separate a realistic resale view from a retail replacement figure.

The in-person collateral assessment

The owner brings the Breguet to our Mayfair office with the service invoice and box. The watch is handled using appropriate equipment while the case, bezel, crown, pushers, dial, hands, crystal, caseback and strap are reviewed.

The assessment considers:

  • Whether the watch appeared consistent with the Type XX 3800 reference.
  • The operation and apparent condition of the flyback chronograph.
  • The condition and consistency of the dial, hands and luminous material.
  • The condition of the steel case, bezel and pushers.
  • The available service evidence and set completeness.
  • Current evidence for comparable Type XX Aéronavale 3800 watches.

Unlike a case study centred on a collectable precious-metal dress watch, this appraisal focuses on functional condition. A Type XX with strong aviation-watch character, a crisp original dial and a correctly operating chronograph can be more appealing than a superficially cleaner example with questionable components or an unresolved mechanical issue.

Illustrative collateral-loan assessment

The client’s Breguet Type XX 3800 has an apparently correct black dial, functioning chronograph, original box and a documented service record. It has normal wear consistent with regular use, but no obvious issue that prevents it from being considered as a potential collateral asset.

If it passes authentication, the movement and flyback mechanism are found to be satisfactory, and the watch compares favourably with the available market evidence; a short-term loan in the region of £2,500 to £3,500 could be possible.

That range reflects a cautious proportion of a realistic secondary-market value, rather than an optimistic dealer retail figure. A freshly serviced full-set example on bracelet may support a stronger assessment, while a watch needing major work, with an uncertain service history or non-original dial and hands could fall materially below it.

A three-month bridge before payment cleared

The contractor expects the outstanding project settlement to arrive within several weeks, but selects a three-month loan term to allow for administrative delays. This gives him a clear repayment route while allowing him to cover immediate business costs without permanently selling the Type XX.

If the client wishes to proceed, we would first request photo ID and proof of address to meet FCA requirements. From there, we would then issue the pre-contract information and loan agreement on your Breguet, setting out the proposed amount, loan term, applicable charges and redemption arrangements.

Once the agreement is completed, the Breguet would be held as security in secure storage for the agreed term. The client could repay at any time during or at the end of the loan term and redeem the watch.

Could your Breguet support a similar loan?

This example shows why a Breguet should be valued as a specific watch, rather than simply by brand name. A Type XX Aéronavale demands a different approach from a Classique, Marine, Tradition, Reine de Naples, vintage Type 20 or high-complication Breguet.

For the Type XX 3800, the exact reference, operation of the flyback chronograph, dial and lume condition, servicing, originality, set completeness and current comparable evidence can all affect the assessment.
