FAQs

Pawning your GIA-certified diamonds with New Bond Street Pawnbrokers in Mayfair offers a flexible alternative to selling. You retain ownership while accessing immediate funds, with the option to reclaim your diamonds upon repaying the loan.

We value diamonds through a physical examination of the stone and, where applicable, the jewellery setting. We assess the internationally recognised Four Cs (carat weight, cut, colour and clarity), alongside additional factors that affect liquidity and resale value.

Our appraisal may consider:

– Carat weight and exact measurements.
– Shape and cutting style, including round brilliant, oval, emerald, pear or cushion cut.
– Cut quality, proportions, polish, symmetry and light performance.
– Colour grade for white diamonds, or hue, tone and saturation for fancy-colour diamonds.
– Clarity characteristics, including the size, position, nature and visibility of inclusions.
– Fluorescence, as well as any laser inscription or identifying features.
– Whether the diamond is natural, laboratory-grown or treated.
– Certification, provenance and current comparable sales.

For mounted diamonds, the design, metal, craftsmanship, condition and any brand premium.

Loan amounts vary based on your diamond’s characteristics. At our New Bond Street location, we typically offer loans between 50-70% of the diamond’s current market value.

The amount available depends on the assessed resale value of the diamond or diamond jewellery, its liquidity and the level of confidence we have in its quality, authenticity, documentation and current demand.

A higher loan amount may be possible where the diamond is:

– A natural stone with a recognised laboratory report.

– A desirable size, shape and quality for the secondary market.

– D-colour or near-colourless, with high clarity and strong cut quality.

– A rare natural fancy-colour diamond with strong saturation.

– Mounted in desirable jewellery by a recognised luxury brand.

– Accompanied by original paperwork, purchase documentation, branded packaging or a clear ownership history.

A more cautious loan-to-value may apply where there are treatment concerns, missing documentation, lower-demand specifications, substantial fluorescence, visible inclusions, condition issues or a less liquid market.

Yes. The Four Cs (Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat) are crucial in assessing a diamond’s quality and value, but they do not all carry equal weight in every case. Various factors significantly impact the loan amount we can offer when you pawn GIA-certified diamonds.

For example, Sotheby’s estimated a 7.13-carat pear-shaped Faint Blue diamond, graded Natural Colour and VS2 clarity by GIA, at approximately £195,000–£275,000 in 2024. In the same year, a far smaller 1.41-carat Fancy Vivid Green-Blue diamond with I2 clarity carried an estimate of roughly £275,000–£430,000.

The smaller stone had the higher estimate range because the rarity and saturation of its natural Fancy Vivid colour outweighed its lower carat weight and clarity. In coloured-diamond valuation, an exceptional natural colour can therefore be more commercially significant than size alone.

Things to understand related to the 4 Cs when evaluating a diamond for collateral loans at pawn shops:

– Colour grades range from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Higher grades (D-F) typically secure higher loan values when you borrow against certified diamonds.

– Carat refers to a diamond’s weight. Larger diamonds are rarer, often commanding higher values per carat when pawning loose diamonds.

– Cut affects a diamond’s brilliance and overall appeal. Excellent cuts can significantly increase a diamond’s value when seeking diamond loans.

Clarity grades range from Flawless to Included. Higher clarity grades generally secure better loan terms with our Mayfair diamond pawnbrokers.

No, New Bond Street Pawnbrokers encourages early repayment without penalties, allowing you to reclaim your diamonds sooner.

Our standard loan terms are between 2 and 7 months, but they can be extended if necessary. We offer flexible options to suit your circumstances.

Diamond loans are available for terms of two to seven months. Your agreement confirms the amount borrowed, a fixed monthly interest rate of 5%, redemption date and total repayment amount before you proceed.

You may redeem your diamond or jewellery at any point during the loan term by paying the outstanding capital and interest due under your agreement. There is no separate early-redemption penalty, but you should contact us before collection to request a current settlement figure.

For example, if you borrow £10,000 against a diamond ring for four months at 5% monthly interest, interest is £500 per month. If you redeem after two months, the illustrated repayment is £11,000, which translates to £10,000 capital plus £1,000 interest. Once settlement has been received, the diamond ring is returned to you.

If you need more time at the end of the loan term, contact us before the redemption date to discuss whether a renewal can be arranged. Renewal is subject to agreement and normally requires accrued interest to be paid first.

If you cannot repay the loan, we may sell your diamonds to recover the borrowed amount. However, we always strive to work with clients to find alternative solutions.

You’ll need to provide the GIA certificate for your diamonds, proof of ownership, and a valid ID. In some cases, additional documentation may be required.

Yes. Diamond valuations and loan arrangements are handled privately and confidentially. We understand that clients may be borrowing against jewellery for commercial, personal, estate-planning or short-term liquidity reasons, and we treat enquiries discreetly.

Once the loan is agreed, your diamond or diamond jewellery is stored securely for the duration of the active agreement. It is not displayed, worn, lent or sold while your loan remains active and you remain within its terms.

We use secure storage arrangements designed for high-value jewellery, with restricted access, 24-hour surveillance and alarm protection. Jewellery is held in appropriate conditions to protect it from unauthorised access, avoidable handling and environmental risks.

No credit check is required. A diamond loan is secured against the diamond or jewellery itself, rather than your credit score, income or borrowing history. Making an inquiry does not affect your credit rating.

We consider loans against natural diamonds, including loose certified diamonds, diamond rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and selected branded jewellery.

Suitable diamonds may include:

– Colourless diamonds.
– Fancy-colour diamonds.
– Round brilliant, emerald, oval, pear, cushion, radiant, marquise and princess-cut diamonds.
– Single stones, matched pairs and suites of diamonds.
– Diamond-set jewellery by recognised maisons such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Graff, Bulgari, Tiffany & Co. and Harry Winston.
– Antique, vintage and contemporary diamond jewellery.

We focus on the individual stone or piece rather than simply the total carat weight. For example, a well-cut, natural-colour diamond with strong certification can be more suitable collateral than a larger stone with lower colour or clarity, treatment concerns or limited resale demand.

Yes. A GIA report can make the appraisal process more efficient because it provides an independent record of the stone’s assessed characteristics. It can also help us match the diamond to its report through details such as measurements, inclusions, report number and any laser inscription.

For a natural diamond, a GIA report may confirm:

– Carat weight.
– Colour and clarity grade.
– Shape, cutting style and measurements.
– Cut grade for eligible standard round brilliant diamonds.
– Polish, symmetry and fluorescence.
– Whether treatments have been detected.
– A plotted clarity diagram and report number.

In some cases, whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown. A certificate supports valuation, but it does not replace a physical inspection. We still examine the diamond at our Mayfair office to confirm that the stone corresponds with the report.

This distinction matters because GIA Diamond Dossiers are issued only for certain loose natural diamonds and are not issued for mounted stones, synthetics, simulants or diamonds with some unstable treatments.

Yes. We can consider diamond jewellery from recognised luxury houses, including Cartier, Graff, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Harry Winston and other established makers.
A recognised brand can add value when the jewellery is authentic, well designed, in strong condition and supported by appropriate documentation. We assess the diamonds themselves as well as the maker, design, materials, craftsmanship, date, hallmarks, serial numbers and completeness of the set.

For branded jewellery, helpful items include:

– Original purchase invoice or receipt.
– Brand box, certificate, pouch and service documentation.
– GIA, HRD, IGI or other relevant diamond reports.
– Hallmarks, serial numbers and signed components.
– Any prior auction catalogue or valuation.
– Branding does not automatically override diamond quality. A smaller branded stone with strong documentation and excellent craftsmanship may be highly desirable. However, the central diamond’s natural origin, grading, condition and current demand remain central to the loan decision.

Yes. We can consider a loan against one loose diamond, a single diamond ring or necklace, a matched pair of earrings, a suite of jewellery or a larger collection.
For a single diamond, our appraisal centres on the precise stone: carat weight, cut, colour, clarity, treatment status, certification and demand. For a collection, we assess each item individually before considering the combined value and practical resale options.

A collection may include:

– Several loose certified diamonds.
– Diamond rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants and necklaces.
– Matching diamond suites.
– Branded jewellery from one or more luxury houses.
– Mixed fine jewellery containing diamonds and coloured gemstones.
– Matched pairs can be particularly valuable where the diamonds are closely matched in size, shape, colour and clarity.

Useful Guides

You can rest assured that you will receive a competitive deal on the market from the most awarded collateral lender in the UK. All our loans come with competitive rates of fixed 5% (Representative APR 60%), no hidden fees at all, no early release fees, and loan terms from two up to seven months. A representative example of repayment for a two-month loan of £2500 is £250, thus a total repayment of £2750 at a fixed 5% interest rate (60% per annum).
