How much can I borrow against a Rolex?
Most Rolex owners can borrow between 50% and 70% of what their watch would fetch at auction today. The exact figure depends on the reference, its condition, whether the box and papers are present, and how quickly that model sells. This FAQ explains how we arrive at the number, with worked examples for a Submariner and a Datejust.

The short answer
A loan against a Rolex is sized from its current auction value, not its retail price. For a modern stainless-steel sports model in good condition with box and papers, we would typically offer around 60% to 70% of the expected hammer price. For a precious-metal or less liquid reference, or a watch with missing documents, the figure moves towards 50%. The loan is for up to seven months at a fixed 5% monthly interest rate, with no credit checks and no penalty for settling early.

What the valuation is based on
Our valuers start with the exact reference and serial range, then check recent results for the same reference at the major auction houses and specialist dealers. Condition matters a great deal: unpolished cases, original bracelets and matching bezels and dials all push the valuation up, while refinished cases, service replacement parts and aftermarket additions pull it down. A complete set with the original box, guarantee card and service history can add a meaningful premium because it makes the watch easier to sell.

Example: a Submariner Date 116610LN
A 2017 Submariner Date in steel, with box and card and light wear, might be expected to sell for around £10,000 at auction. As one of the most liquid watches in the world, it would support a loan near the top of the range, so an advance of £6,500 to £7,000 would be realistic. Over three months the interest at 5% per month would come to about £1,000 on a £6,500 advance.

Example: a Datejust 36 in two-tone
A 1990s Datejust 36 in steel and yellow gold with a champagne dial is a popular watch but a slower seller than a steel sports model, and prices vary more with condition. If comparable examples are achieving £5,000, we would be more likely to offer around 50% to 60%, so £2,500 to £3,000, and more if the watch is a full set in excellent condition.
