Banksy Love Rat Unsigned Print – A Collateral Loan Case Study Example

Banksy’s impact on British modern art in the 21st century is immense. Many of his works have sold at auction for princely sums, including Love Is in the Bin (£18.58m), Game Changer (£16.76m), and Sunflowers from Petrol Station (£10.7m). His output is eclectic and includes stencil-based street art, paintings, sculpture, and editioned screenprints.

Editioned prints require a different type of evaluation from fine art painting. While authenticity, condition, provenance and comparable sales remain important, the appraiser must establish the exact publication, because two impressions can differ in signature status, paper preservation, mounting history and documentation.

This hypothetical case study looks at the entire process when a customer tries to use a Banksy Love Rat print as collateral for a pawnbroker loan.

Scenario: The Owner’s Funding Requirement

The owner is a salaried communications director facing an unexpected £10,000 course of dental treatment. Payment is required before sufficient savings can be rebuilt from monthly income. Rather than immediately selling a print they wish to keep, the owner considers a five-month collateral loan.

The asset is a framed Banksy Love Rat from the unsigned edition of 600, accompanied by a gallery purchase invoice and an original Pest Control certificate. The example assumes a small crease in the lower-right margin, with the paper beneath the mount still unexamined.

The initial enquiry would include photographs of the image, frame, numbering, visible publisher’s mark and crease, together with copies of the supporting documents.

Identifying the Unsigned Love Rat Edition

Love Rat was published by Pictures on Walls in 2004 as a screenprint in colours on wove paper. The unsigned edition contains 600 numbered impressions, separate from the signed edition of 150.

The pencil edition number would identify the individual impression within the edition. It would not make the sheet artist-signed. Results for signed examples should therefore not anchor the valuation of this unsigned work without an explicit explanation of the difference.

The specialist would also distinguish the printed image from the complete sheet. Frame dimensions say little about whether the paper retains its original edges, while measurements through a mount cannot establish that the concealed margins are intact.

Additionally, some unsigned examples feature a Pictures on Walls blind stamp, an impressive mark in the paper. Where relevant, this detail would form part of an appraisal checklist.

Love Rat-Specific Appraisal Considerations

Edition identification would be the central issue for our appraisal. Any comparable evidence would need to look for the same publication and unsigned edition, rather than simply a Love Rat print.

The assessment would consider the quality of the printed colour, the paper surface and registration, which is the alignment of the colours during printing. The red heart and surrounding unprinted paper would also be examined for changes in appearance. This detail would not necessarily show up on a photo, which underlines the importance of a physical inspection.

The edition number would serve principally as an identifier. However, a low number would not necessarily justify a higher assessment; condition and demand are more impactful.

Condition, Margins and Supporting Documents

The crease would remain relevant throughout our assessment. The specialist would establish whether it affects only the blank margin, approaches the image, has broken the paper fibres or shows signs of earlier treatment.

The mount creates a separate uncertainty. Hidden edges may be complete and clean, but could also show trimming, staining or adhesive damage. Similarly, we would check for foxing, fading, tears, trimming and mounting-related problems when evaluating condition.

Pest Control states that it is the only source of Banksy certificates of authenticity. They also provide a service for checking or registering certified artworks. The core concept for an appraisal would be whether the certificate corresponds to this particular sheet.

Researching Comparable Prices

The most useful evidence would be recent completed sales of unsigned Love Rat impressions with comparable documentation, full sheets and known condition.

Phillips’ January 2025 sale records £24,130 for lot 47 against an estimate of £10,000–£15,000. The catalogue identifies unsigned impression 62/600, with full margins, a Pictures on Walls blind stamp and a Pest Control certificate. MyArtBroker separately reports an unsigned example sold at Forum Auctions on 15 October 2025 for approximately £18,000 including buyer’s charges.

These figures have different bases. However, they should not be averaged without adjustment or treated as sums a lender would necessarily recover. For this scenario, £15,000–£18,000 is a provisional working valuation. The visible crease, concealed condition and updated market evidence would all need to be resolved before a final assessment.

Specialist Assessment in Mayfair

At the Mayfair appointment, the specialist would compare the physical print art with the publication details, purchase records and Pest Control documentation. We would record numbering, blindstamp, image dimensions and accessible sheet dimensions.

The examination would focus on the crease and any evidence of trimming, repair or mounting damage. If the frame prevents a reliable assessment, the specialist would explain what further inspection is required rather than assume the concealed paper is satisfactory.

The findings would then be considered alongside closely matched auction evidence. The appointment would not presume authenticity, complete margins or a favourable valuation. An unresolved documentation issue or materially worse condition could reduce the assessment or prevent an offer.

Illustrative Five-Month Collateral-Loan Assessment

At a conditional £15,000 valuation, an illustrative 60% lending proportion would produce a potential £9,000 advance. The owner would remain £1,000 short of the treatment payment and would need to cover that difference separately.

At £18,000, the same assumed proportion would produce £10,800. That could meet the £10,000 requirement, although the owner would not need to borrow the maximum amount available.

More extensive paper damage, inconsistent documentation or weaker current sales evidence could reduce the amount available. Serious unresolved authenticity concerns could prevent lending rather than simply result in a lower percentage.

Agreement, Secure Storage and Redemption

Before accepting a proposal, identification, proof of address and supporting ownership records would be required. The pre-contract information and proposed agreement would explain the advance, interest, charges, repayment requirements and consequences of failing to redeem the print.

If an agreement is completed, the intake record would identify the numbered sheet, frame and certificate separately. Photographs would record the crease and other condition findings. We ensure that prints are stored securely with attention to their medium and presentation, away from direct sunlight, with associated certificates retained alongside the work.

The owner would obtain a settlement figure before redemption and agree collection arrangements following repayment.

Discussing a Loan Against a Banksy Print

For this Love Rat, the useful starting points are the unsigned edition, matching Pest Control documentation, preservation of the full sheet and the extent of the margin crease.

An informative enquiry would include the exact title, edition number, sheet dimensions and photographs of the numbering, publisher’s mark, margins and visible damage. If the frame conceals relevant areas, that limitation should be stated openly.

Any valuation or preliminary assessment is indicative and does not constitute a loan offer. Lending would depend on examination of the work, acceptance by the lender and agreement on the terms.
